‘You want to talk to your children?’

He remembered the conversation. Sitting in the canteen in Manchester. He was 30, just been promoted to sergeant. Ash was still a toddler. Two older uniform guys at the next table. ‘You want to talk to them? The only way to do it is to put them in the car.’

‘Or take them for a walk. But it’s got to be with the dog.’

‘No,’ the first one said. ‘I want to talk to my lad the only way is in the car. Something about not looking at each other. And the road. Works every time. Sit him down at the table and say ‘we need to talk, Damian’ and he clams up. Road trip. Definite. It’s the only way you can talk to a teenager.’

Does Durham to Whitby count as a road trip? We’ll soon find out…

“You sure you’ve got everything?”

“Dad, I only brought a sports bag. And a hockey stick. We were only here one night.”

Brady started the car. Turned the wipers on. Drove out of Durham. Didn’t say anything for the first ten minutes. Didn’t want to rush it. Started off low-key. “We should be home in an hour and a half hopefully. There won’t be much traffic round Middlesbrough. Archie will be surprised to see you.”

Archie. I should have seen this coming What was it? A week ago?

‘You alright, Ash? You don’t usually volunteer to take Archie out in the rain.’

‘I’m fine, Dad. I just… I like being with Archie. We’re good friends. We talk.’

‘The only thing Archie wants to talk about is where the next biscuit is coming from.’

‘You’re wrong, Dad. Archie’s a good listener. You could learn a lot from Archie.’

She’d turned and walked out of the room, Archie scampering after her. Brady had spent half an hour wondering what he’d done wrong. Was still wondering when a very wet Ash and an even wetter Archie came through the door.
